As someone who’s been in the financial planning industry for 12 years, I’ve learned that our most valuable asset isn’t just our wealth portfolio – it’s our wellbeing! And quality sleep is truly non-negotiable for peak performance. Just like diversifying investments protects our financial future, prioritizing sleep safeguards our mental and physical capital.
Just like how I always emphasize the importance of emergency funds to my #Estsquad, I realize that good sleep is our body’s emergency reserve. Without it, we can’t show up as our best selves for our clients, family, and most importantly, ourselves! Think of sleep debt like compound interest – but in reverse. Each night of poor sleep compounds into decreased performance, weakened immunity, and diminished decision-making capacity.
My personal sleep journey wasn’t always perfect. Working in finance taught me about compound growth, but it took years to understand this principle applies to our health too. Being a Master FC means juggling client meetings, continuous learning, and personal commitments. There were times I sacrificed sleep thinking I could be more productive… but guess what? Just like poor financial planning, poor sleep habits compound negatively over time!
I learned this lesson the hard way after one particularly grueling quarter where my performance noticeably suffered due to sleep deprivation.
Here are my current non-negotiable sleep standards (just like my investing principles! )

Create a wind-down routine
Just like how I help my clients plan their finances step by step, I plan my evening routine. No more scrolling through market updates right before bed! Instead, I’ve created a calming ritual that includes 20 minutes of reading (non-financial material!), light stretching, and meditation. Think of it as dollar-cost averaging your way into restful sleep – small, consistent actions that yield big results.

Invest in quality
We invest in good insurance coverage for protection – similarly, I’ve learned to invest in a good mattress and creating the right sleep environment. It’s an investment that pays dividends in energy and clarity!Ā Just as we wouldn’t cut corners on our emergency fund, I’ve found that investing in blackout curtains, a quality pillow, and temperature control has yielded incredible returns in sleep quality.

Consistency is key
Like regular investing, maintaining consistent sleep hours helps build a healthy sleep portfolio! Even on weekends, I try not to deviate too much from my usual schedule. Think of it as maintaining a balanced portfolio – you wouldn’t randomly change your investment strategy, so why disrupt your sleep schedule? I aim for the same 7-hour sleep window every night, treating it as non-negotiable as a client meeting.

Listen to your body
Just as we need to regularly review our financial portfolio, we need to pay attention to our body’s signals. Sometimes, that extra hour of sleep is more valuable than any morning meeting!Ā I’ve learned to treat sleep signals like market indicators – when my body shows signs of fatigue, I take it as seriously as a dip in the market.

Like monitoring investment performance, I now keep a sleep journal tracking my habits and their impact on my daily performance. This data-driven approach has helped me optimize my routine for maximum returns in energy and focus.
